Working With Galvanized Pipes in Older Homes Requires a Different Approach

Plumbing work in older homes often involves more than a simple fixture replacement. Many properties still have galvanized piping, which behaves very differently compared to newer materials.
In this project, the shower and bathtub were installed back-to-back on the same wall. To complete the work properly, we needed to access and update both sides.

Shower and Tub Repairs With Galvanized Plumbing
This is common in older homes, where both fixtures are connected to the same supply lines.
Because of this layout, a problem on one side can affect both fixtures. To complete the repair properly, both the shower and tub valves were addressed as part of the same project.

Working With Galvanized Pipes
Galvanized pipes can corrode over time, restricting water flow and weakening connections. Unlike newer materials such as copper or PEX, galvanized piping is threaded and rigid, not flexible.
This means that even small changes can become more involved. Cutting or removing one section often affects the surrounding connections, so adjustments need to be planned carefully.
Because of this, repairs are approached with attention to how the entire system is connected, not just the visible problem.
Wall Access for Proper Installation
To reach the plumbing and make the necessary updates, we opened the wall behind the bathtub.
This allowed for:
full access to the piping
proper installation of the new shower valve
adjustments to the tub connections
Trying to avoid opening the wall in situations like this can lead to incomplete repairs and future issues.

Coordinating the Repair on Both Sides
Since the shower and tub share the same wall, both sides were handled together:
shower valve replacement
tub valve replacement
connection adjustments for proper fit
Addressing both fixtures at the same time helps prevent future problems and keeps the system consistent.

Restoring the Wall and Finished Space
After the plumbing work was completed, we repaired the wall and finished it so the space could be returned to normal use.
Projects are handled as a complete process, including both the plumbing work and the final condition of the space as part of our plumbing services.
Final Result
The result is a properly functioning shower and bathtub system with updated components and improved reliability.
